Last night she rest her head
Mat on the floor, her shelter bed
4 months gone / baby due
Over her head in the blues
Tomika died in her sleep last night

Living her life in silent agony
A volunteer to earn her safety from the streets
She passed quietly to her place of rest
Where everything is counted but pain
Tomika died in her sleep last night

A beautiful face to warm us
Though her eyes told the story of need
Desperation, loneliness
Today her story is a eulogy
Tomika died in her sleep

What do we do! What do we say?
When a person dies in the sheltered place
Her freedom paid in full with her life

Compassion has a ‘hard’ heart condition
Street wars money dope and whores
The bottom gets less, the top gets more
And the poor are buried in red tape
Tomika died in her sleep

Today we need to pray
Today we are less you and me
Last night, Tomika died in her sleep
Lord, may she rest in Peace
